Understanding the Different Types of Flow Meters

A Flow Meter is a device that is used to measure flow rate of a liquid or a gas. Flow meters are used in various industries and play an important role in each industry depending on their usage and working type.

There are different types of flow meters that can be used for something or the other. The selection of the flow meter depends on the type of flow measurement it will incurring and also on the material required as the construction of the flow meter.

Turbine Flow meter: Turbine Flow meter is a type of flow meter which uses mechanical energy from the fluids to rotate the rotor or pinwheel present in the flow stream. Turbine Flow meters are used to measure the velocity of substances such as gas, liquid and vapour present in the pipe.

Vortex Flow meter: Vortex Flow meter helps in keeping the flow of the substances going without any problem. The things that become hindrance in the flow of the fluid creates vortices in the flow. In this obstruction situation, the vortex shedding happens.

Venturi meter: In this the flow is tightened in such a way that the pressure sensors are able to measure the different pressure before and within the constricted fluid's flow rate.

Thermal Mass Flow meter: Thermal mass flow meter is the combination of heated elements as well as the temperature sensors that can be measure in both still and flowing transfers of the fluid. In this flow meter, the temperature of the fluid is measured and compensated as well.

Electromagnetic Flow meter: The working procedure of the electromagnetic flow meter is based on the Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. According to the Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, the voltage is induced when the conductor is moving through the magnetic fields. The liquid in this plays the role of conductor and the magnetic field is generated by the energized coil that is present outside the flow tube.

Differential Pressure Flow meter: It is one of the most commonly used flow meter. It has got two elements namely primary and secondary element. The primary element helps in changing the kinetic energy that creates differential pressure in the flow pipe. The secondary element helps in measuring the differential pressure and helps in recording the flow value provided by the signals.

Ultrasonic Flow meter: Ultrasonic flow meters are of two types, they are Doppler meters and time-of-travel (or transit) meters. They both have different uses and have different applications for different fluid or substance type.
