It is a compatible and convenient device which is mainly used to measure the RPM (Rotations per Minute) speed of a rotating body, but is capable of measuring the angular distance and speed as well. Surprisingly, it can also measure the acceleration of the body by keeping a track of the instantaneous speed. It is also known as a revolution counter.

Tachometer is a digital and electrical device which is mainly battery- powered. These batteries are conveniently, non- volatile batteries so that the data does not get erased off if the it is not connected to the main power supply. Some other types also use rechargeable battery cells which are even more convenient and give a better experience.
Ø What is a contact tachometer?
A contact revolution counter is another variant which has an elongated thin stick- type structure out, which responsible for the measurement work. It requires a contact between the device through the stick and the body whose measurements are to be taken.
Ø What is a non- contact tachometer? What are its different types?
These are the exact opposite of the type mentioned earlier. They have no elongated structure to measure and do not require any contact between the two bodies and thus, provide a better experience and service.
It is broadly classified into laser and optical types. The laser ones, as the name suggests, use laser light to serve their purpose while the optical ones are even more handy and attractive.

Tachometer are usually, now used in each aspect where rotational speed is to be measured like the mills, motor and engine manufacturing industries, automobiles, automobiles manufacturing centres and in marine fleet.
